I got this to install in a home-made center console in the back of my old mini-van. I’ve already got a stereo in the front, and personally do not often care to listen to music or radio programs while driving anyway, so what I really want out of this is to play DVD’s to entertain my kids.

I expect the sound quality has more to do with my speakers than anything else, but I’m perfectly happy with it even though my speakers are salvaged junk from another car. The screen image is quite sharp, but the smallness of the viewing area is a real problem as far as getting this close enough to the viewer to see reasonably yet far enough away so kids sitting in both sides of the rear seat can see it.

The unit came with a sticker over the screen saying how it has a safety feature that hooks into your parking brake system to prevent videos from being played while driving. The sticker warns that it is illegal to override this feature with any device or unit that generates a false parking brake signal. In reality all you got to do is run the brake signal wire to ground and the video mode will play, so it is not like you are defeating the Nazi Enigma code machine or anything. Since my installation is not even visible from the driver’s seat, I eliminated the safety feature.

A remote control is included with this unit, but it has so many tiny buttons I get a headache just looking at it. I can control everything I want by the touchscreen, so I will certainly never use the remote.

I got this outfit free to review, and I’m entirely satisfied with it for my own specialized use. But if I was going to buy one for conventional use I would absolutely pay the extra money to get the Bluetooth version so I could have my preferred quiet while my teenage daughter listened to music over headphones in the back seat.
